King's 2025 Heritage Award Recipient

Council presented the 2025 King Township Heritage Award to Nicole Stamos the owner of Schomberg Pub & Patio (226 Main Street), a property selected by the Heritage Advisory Committee for its outstanding stewardship of one of Schomberg’s most recognizable historic buildings.

Built around 1880 and originally known as Dr. Dillany’s House, the property has played an important role in the village for well over a century. Dr. Dillany himself served the community as a physician for more than 50 years, and today, the building continues to serve as a vibrant gathering place on Main Street.

The property’s well-preserved Victorian architecture and the care taken in maintaining its historic character contribute significantly to the charm and identity of the Schomberg village core. This recognition highlights a strong commitment to heritage conservation and the preservation of King’s history.

Age-Friendly Community Action Plan

Council endorsed King Township’s Age-Friendly Community Action Plan, a long-term strategy designed to support residents aged 55+ and ensure King remains a welcoming, inclusive place to live at every stage of life.

The plan is grounded in extensive community input including feedback from nearly 500 residents, staff, and stakeholders and focuses on removing barriers, improving services, and supporting healthy aging across the Township.

The Action Plan is built around eight priority areas:

  • Housing

  • Mobility

  • Communication

  • Community & Health Services

  • Community Engagement

  • Safety & Accessibility

  • Respect & Inclusion

  • Participation

Specific actions include exploring new housing strategies, expanding transportation options, improving digital and direct communication, and increasing access to programs and services across all three villages.

It's important to note that this is a foundational plan, not an immediate implementation document. Many actions including around hosing will be informed by upcoming work such as the Official Plan update and future studies.

While the plan focuses on residents 55+, its benefits extend to the entire community. An age-friendly King means safer streets, better accessibility, more connected communities, stronger local services, and a better quality of life for residents of all ages.

Fence By-law Amendment re Front Yard Fences

Council approved an amendment to King Township’s Fence By-law to better reflect current rural and estate property needs. The change increases the maximum permitted height for open-concept front yard fences on Estate Residential and Rural Residential properties from 1.22 metres (4 feet) to 1.83 metres (6 feet). This update responds to ongoing requests from property owners and recognizes evolving development patterns, including larger lot sizes and a growing desire for clearer property delineation.

The amendment applies only to open-style fences that maintain visibility through them, ensuring that traffic sightlines and safety are preserved, and does not apply to all propertiesonly those within Estate and Rural Residential zones. Closed or solid fences remain more restricted due to safety considerations. A review of comparable municipalities confirmed that many already permit taller front yard fences under certain conditions, helping ensure King’s regulations remain consistent with current standards. Overall, the change provides greater flexibility for homeowners while maintaining safety and the character of the community.

Budget Transfer for 2026 Gravel Road Conversion Program

Council approved moving forward with the 2026 Gravel Road Conversion Program, which will upgrade several roads to a hardtop surface, including Mill Road, Elmpine Trail, the 17th Sideroad (from Jane Street west to termination at Highway 400) and 12th Concession (from 120m North of Caledon-King Townline to 17th Sideroad). The contract, valued at approximately $1.96 million, will be awarded to Gradewell Group Inc., but required a $750,000 budget increase to proceed due to higher-than-expected costs. The additional funding will come primarily from Development Charges, with a smaller portion from the Capital Tax Levy reserve.

This program is part of the Township’s long-term goal to pave all gravel roads by 2040. While the project is described as “paving,” the roads will actually be upgraded using a double surface treatment rather than to full pavement, which is more appropriate for rural roads with lower traffic volumes and provides strong durability with lower costs and will be designed to accommodate farm equipment.
